High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) Method for Analysis of Imidazolidinyl urea.
Imidazolidinyl urea is a preservative with the chemical formula C11H16N8O8. used in cosmetics as due to its antimicrobial properties. It is active against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria, yeast and molds.
Imidazolidinyl urea can be retained in HPLC using a SHARC 1 column, which uses hydrogen-bonding as a separation mechanism. The isocratic method uses a mobile phase of acetonitrile (ACN) and water. Imidazolidinyl urea can be monitored by low UV (210 nm), ELSD, CAD or LC/MS.

Separation of Imidazolidinyl urea on Newcrom R1 HPLC column

Imidazolidinyl urea can be analyzed by this reverse phase (RP) HPLC method with simple conditions. The mobile phase contains an acetonitrile (MeCN), water, and phosphoric acid. For Mass-Spec (MS) compatible applications the phosphoric acid needs to be replaced with formic acid. Smaller 3 µm particles columns available for fast UPLC applications. This liquid chromatography method is scalable and can be used for isolation impurities in preparative separation. It also suitable for pharmacokinetics.
