Fluvoxamine is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It’s primarily used to treat a range of anxiety and obsessive-compulsive related disorders.

Medical Uses:

  1. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Fluvoxamine is commonly used to reduce the symptoms of OCD. It helps decrease persistent/unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and urges to perform repeated tasks (compulsions such as hand-washing, counting, checking).
  2. Anxiety Disorders: It may be used in the treatment of various anxiety disorders, helping to reduce worry, fear, and panic attacks.
  3. Depressive Disorders: While not its primary indication, fluvoxamine can also be used in managing symptoms of depression, especially if linked with OCD or anxiety.
  4. Other Uses: Occasionally, fluvoxamine might be used off-label for other purposes under a psychiatrist’s guidance.

Mechanism of Action:

  • Serotonin Reuptake Inhibition: Fluvoxamine works by inhibiting the reuptake of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain, increasing the amount of serotonin available in the synaptic cleft and thus enhancing neurotransmission. This increase in serotonin levels is believed to help regulate mood and reduce the symptoms of anxiety and OCD.

Conclusion:

Fluvoxamine can be retained, and analyzed on a Primesep 100 mixed-mode stationary phase column using an isocratic analytical method with a simple mobile phase of water, Acetonitrile (MeCN), and a sulfuric acid as a buffer. This analysis method can be detected using UV at 252 nm.
