Polidone Iodide (Povidone-Iodine / PVP-I)

Polidone Iodide, more commonly known as Povidone-Iodine (PVP-I), is a widely used antiseptic and disinfectant. It is a complex of iodine with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), designed to provide sustained release of iodine for antimicrobial action.

☑️ Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP):

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), a multifunctional synthetic polymer, finds broad utility in life science and biochemical research. This water-soluble polymer serves various roles:

  • Stabilizing agent
  • Emulsifier
  • Suspending agent
  • Solubilizing agent
  • Protective colloid
  • Complexing agent

Its protective colloid properties are particularly valuable in stabilizing proteins, enzymes, and other biological substances, making it ideal for forming stable complexes with iodine in medical formulations.

Acts as the active antimicrobial agent, effective against:

  • Protozoa

In the complex, iodine is slowly released, providing sustained antiseptic action with reduced irritation compared to free iodine.

Iodide, PVP can be retained and analyzed using the PVP column. The analysis utilizes an step gradient method with a simple mobile phase consisting of water, acetonitrile (MeCN), and ammonium acetate. Detection is performed using ELSD.
