HPLC Method for Analysis of Trimellitic Anhydride and Trimellitic Acid on Newcrom B Column
July 29, 2022
Separation type: Liquid Chromatography Mixed-mode
High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) Method for Analysis of Trimellitic Anhydride and Trimellitic Acid
Trimellitic Anhydride is a common precursor to plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride (PVC); it’s acid form is Trimellitic Acid. In acidic water, Trimellitic Anhydride will ‘open up’ back into Trimellitic Acid. Trimellitic Anhydride and Trimellitic Acid can be separated, retained, and analyzed on a mixed-mode Newcrom B column with a mobile phase consisting of water, Acetonitrile (MeCN), and Formic acid (FA). This analytical method can be UV detected at 250 nm or via negatively-charged Electrospray Ionization (ESI-) with high resolution and peak symmetry.
Column | Newcrom B, 4.6×150 mm, 100A |
Mobile Phase | MeCN/H2O -50/50% |
Buffer | Formic Acid- 1.0% |
Flow Rate | 1.0 ml/min |
Detection | UV 250 nm, ESI |
Class of Compounds | Acid, Hydrophilic |
Analyzing Compounds | Trimellitic Anhydride and Trimellitic Acid |
Application Column
Newcrom B
The Newcrom columns are a family of reverse-phase-based columns. Newcrom A, AH, B, and BH are all mixed-mode columns with either positive or negative ion-pairing groups attached to either short (25 Å) or long (100 Å) ligand chains. Newcrom R1 is a special reverse-phase column with low silanol activity.

High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) Method of Trimellitic anhydride.
Trimellitic anhydride is a trifunctional, highly reactive aromatic anhydride. It is used as a curing agent for epoxy and other resins; in vinyl plasticizers, paints, coatings, dyes, pigments and a wide variety of other manufactured products. Trimellitic Anhydride can be retained in HPLC with a Newcrom BH mixed-mode column using a mobile phase of acetonitrile (ACN) and water and Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4) buffer allowing the use of a UV detector at 210 nm.

Buffer | H2SO4 – 0.2% |
Flow Rate | 0.5 ml/min |

Trimellitic anhydride can be analyzed by this reverse phase (RP) HPLC method with simple conditions. The mobile phase contains an acetonitrile (MeCN), water, and phosphoric acid. For Mass-Spec (MS) compatible applications the phosphoric acid needs to be replaced with formic acid. Smaller 3 µm particles columns available for fast UPLC applications. This liquid chromatography method is scalable and can be used for isolation impurities in preparative separation. It also suitable for pharmacokinetics.
