High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) Method for Analysis of L-Carnitine and Arginine

Meldonium is a popular treatment for ischemia in Eastern Europe. It helps open the arteries, thereby increasing blood flow. Due to reports of athletes using it as a performance-enhancing drug, it has been banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency since 2016.
Meldonium can be detected in the low UV regime. Using a Primesep 100 reverse-phase column and a mobile phase consisting of water and acetonitrile (MeCN) with a perchloric acid (HClO4) buffer, meldonium can be retained, measured, and analyzed. This analysis method can be UV detected at 205 nm.

Condition

Column Primesep 100, 4.6×150 mm, 5 µm, 100A
Mobile Phase MeCN/H2O – 25/75%
Buffer HClO4 – 0.2%
Flow Rate 1.0 ml/min
Detection UV, 205 nm
